60- Minute Psalms

Introduction

For several months in 2000 I was a resident in the Bethany Christian Centre in Edinburgh. My life had fallen apart. They were not easy times for me or my family...at all...for many many reasons.

And yet through it all, somehow, somewhere,

I came to realise that God was travelling with me. His love was evident through the staff.

His grace was outrageously at work through fellow residents.      His voice was clear through His Word, the Bible.

There were many, many struggles, tears and arguments in my room

as I fought with Him over who I had become and all I had lost.

Eventually I began to readily identify with the book of Psalms...

the honesty, the depths of despair, the cries, the hope...

I realised that I wasn’t alone in life’s spiritual pilgrimage of failure and triumph.

I hope that the words that follow will encourage you above all to hang onto God, day by day, through darkness and sunshine, in and out of the tunnels, honestly and truly. Maybe this will help you find Him for the first time. Don’t be afraid to tell God what you are thinking as you ponder His Word...even if you disagree or are confused

...after all He already knows!

And the 60-Minute title?  Well I hope you will spend more than just a minute on each

some really do need just a minute to read but all could do with a 60 minutes consideration.  So read on with me!

I have mainly used the New International Version and the Contemporary English Version as my bases for looking at these Psalms. It will be handy to have a Bible beside you…or ready online – as you journey through these psalms.

Finally, this set of studies is dedicated to my sons Ross and Paul, and my Bethany ‘brothers’

Goldie, Mikey, Darren and Charlie.

If you have journeyed with me over these past 10 years it will not surprise you to discover my choice of Psalm...10 years later.     PSALM 18 has been my go-to psalm for many a year....and especially since 2000.

David is honest about his life, his struggles, his faith.....his God.

Wherever you are at in life, wherever you are reading these words.... I hope you are being honest with God and letting him get you over whatever wall is facing you.  I hope you keep journeying with him....as you look back, look around and look ahead.

God of Psalm 18 bless you!

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said.......
1I love you, Lord, my strength.

2The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

3I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
4The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
5The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.

6In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.
7The earth trembled and quaked,
and the foundations of the mountains shook;
they trembled because he was angry.
8Smoke rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire came from his mouth,
burning coals blazed out of it.
9He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds were under his feet.
10He mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared on the wings of the wind.
11He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
13The Lord thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.
14He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,
with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
15The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, Lord,
at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

16He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
17He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
18They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.
19He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.

20The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
22All his laws are before me;
I have not turned away from his decrees.
23I have been blameless before him
and have kept myself from sin.
24The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27You save the humble
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.
29With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.

30As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
31For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock except our God?
32It is God who arms me with strength
and keeps my way secure.
33He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he causes me to stand on the heights.
34He trains my hands for battle;
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35You make your saving help my shield,
and your right hand sustains me;
your help has made me great.
36You provide a broad path for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.

37I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38I crushed them so that they could not rise;
they fell beneath my feet.
39You armed me with strength for battle;
you humbled my adversaries before me.
40You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
and I destroyed my foes.
41They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
to the Lord, but he did not answer.
42I beat them as fine as windblown dust;
I trampled them like mud in the streets.
43You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
you have made me the head of nations.
People I did not know now serve me,
44foreigners cower before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45They all lose heart;
they come trembling from their strongholds.

46The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted be God my Savior!
47He is the God who avenges me,
who subdues nations under me,
48who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.
49Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing the praises of your name.

50He gives his king great victories;
he shows unfailing love to his anointed,
to David and to his descendants forever.

Amen?
Amen!!

A Psalm of contentment  -   Psalm 131

My heart is not proud, Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
    or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.

A timely Psalm - 121

We all need to slow down sometimes.  Our bodies and minds and spirits often tell us to!

When we do.....where do we turn for renewal and refreshment......especially if we are hurting or weakened or in a hard place?

Psalm 121 points us in the right direction as we begin this issue of LastingFruit......

 I look to the mountains;
    where will my help come from?
My help will come from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let you fall;
    your protector is always awake.

The protector of Israel
    never dozes or sleeps.
The Lord will guard you;
    he is by your side to protect you.
The sun will not hurt you during the day,
    nor the moon during the night.

The Lord will protect you from all danger;
    he will keep you safe.
He will protect you as you come and go
    now and forever.

16th June 2025

An honest Psalm.     Psalm 31

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame;
    deliver me in your righteousness.
Turn your ear to me,
    come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge,
    a strong fortress to save me.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,
    for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,
    for you are my refuge.
Into your hands I commit my spirit;
    deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

I hate those who cling to worthless idols;
    as for me, I trust in the Lord.
I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
    for you saw my affliction
    and knew the anguish of my soul.
You have not given me into the hands of the enemy
    but have set my feet in a spacious place.

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
    my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
    my soul and body with grief.
10 My life is consumed by anguish
    and my years by groaning;

my strength fails because of my affliction,[b]
    and my bones grow weak.
11 Because of all my enemies,
    I am the utter contempt of my neighbors
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
    those who see me on the street flee from me.
12 I am forgotten as though I were dead;
    I have become like broken pottery.
13 For I hear many whispering,
    “Terror on every side!”
They conspire against me
    and plot to take my life.

14 But I trust in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
16 Let your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.
17 Let me not be put to shame, Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent in the realm of the dead.
18 Let their lying lips be silenced,
    for with pride and contempt
    they speak arrogantly against the righteous.

19 How abundant are the good things
    that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,
    on those who take refuge in you.
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them
    from all human intrigues;
you keep them safe in your dwelling
    from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the Lord,
    for he showed me the wonders of his love
    when I was in a city under siege.
22 In my alarm I said,
    “I am cut off from your sight!”
Yet you heard my cry for mercy
    when I called to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people!
    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,
    but the proud he pays back in full.
24 Be strong and take heart,
    all you who hope in the Lord.

A Kingdom Psalm - to read and meditate on......Psalm 95

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.

For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

A Psalm for God's People to pray in Lent.......Psalm 133

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head,
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
    down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
    were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
    even life forevermore.

Psalm 23.     A well known psalm.      A much loved psalm.

Take a few minutes to read slowly these words from the Good News Translation.

Which ones stay with you on the first reading?

The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have everything I need.
He lets me rest in fields of green grass
    and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
He gives me new strength.
He guides me in the right paths,
    as he has promised.
Even if I go through the deepest darkness,
    I will not be afraid, Lord,
    for you are with me.
Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.

You prepare a banquet for me,
    where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honored guest
    and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
    and your house will be my home as long as I live.

Part of a very long Psalm as we consider W W J D....    Psalm 119 verses 105-112

Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
    that I will follow your righteous laws.
107 I have suffered much;
    preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
108 Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,
    and teach me your laws.
109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands,
    I will not forget your law.
110 The wicked have set a snare for me,
    but I have not strayed from your precepts.
111 Your statutes are my heritage forever;
    they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees

    to the very end.

A Psalm for a people on journey with God

Read.....imagine......journey.......

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
    Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;

they are ever praising you.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;

the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
They go from strength to strength,
    till each appears before God in Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;
    listen to me, God of Jacob.

Look on our shield, O God;
    look with favor on your anointed one.

10 Better is one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
    the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
    from those whose walk is blameless.

12 Lord Almighty,
    blessed is the one who trusts in you.

29th August, 2024

A Psalm.  A Prayer.

Psalm 5.

Listen to my words, Lord,
    consider my lament.
Hear my cry for help,
    my King and my God,
    for to you I pray.

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly.
For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
    with you, evil people are not welcome.
The arrogant cannot stand
    in your presence.
You hate all who do wrong;
    you destroy those who tell lies.
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
    you, Lord, detest.
But I, by your great love,
    can come into your house;
in reverence I bow down
    toward your holy temple.

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies—
    make your way straight before me.
Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
    their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;
    with their tongues they tell lies.
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
    Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
    let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous;
    you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

what words stay with you?

what words will you pray for yourself?

19th July, 2024

As you sit and pause in your day......at this slower time of the year......you are encouraged to open your Bible/Bible app at Psalms......and choose one or more psalms that were originally a prayer.... either of David's or the People of God in Worship.......

Take time to read through the prayer - more than once - and consider how God is spoken to and described....what is asked for.....and what else the person is saying to the LORD God.....

praise and worship?

thanksgivng?

confession?

asking for others?

what words will you use in your own prayer as you respond to what you have read........

27th May, 2024

Find a place with space......and sit down with God..... and enjoy afresh His presence and blessings as the Good Shepherd......

The Lord is my shepherd;

You prepare a banquet for me,
    where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honored guest
    and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
    and your house will be my home as long as I live.

12th April, 2024

There are several psalms that declare God is King....and that we are called to bow down in worship to Him....and serve Him.....

Let me therefore invite you to sit down, with your Bible or Bible app, and read through one or two..... and consider with God how He is described and what your response is at this time in your life....

So...in another version to the one you usually use?

Psalm 24 maybe.....or 92,  93  or 95?

What words stay with you?

14th March, 2024

There are several psalms where the writer bares his soul and where his spiritual journey is at.....

As you read this psalm - Psalm 42 - what words stay with you?  How healthy is your soul at this time of the year?

As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
    When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God

under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
    at night his song is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony
    as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

9th February, 2024

There are few Psalms that give us as much to chew over about God's words, God's laws......than Psalm 119......   here we pause and consider the opening eight verses.....   what words stay with you after a couple of readings?

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
    who walk according to the law of the Lord.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes
    and seek him with all their heart—
they do no wrong
    but follow his ways.
You have laid down precepts
    that are to be fully obeyed.
Oh, that my ways were steadfast
    in obeying your decrees!
Then I would not be put to shame
    when I consider all your commands.
I will praise you with an upright heart
    as I learn your righteous laws.
I will obey your decrees;
    do not utterly forsake me.

5th January, 2024

As we start the new year, and as we look around at our world, PSALM 46 seems a good place to pause at......and to consider our God.....and His Kingdom ways.....

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

30th November, 2023

It may be the same psalm.......PSALM 24.......but here we pause with the Good News Translation......as we journey through the season of ADVENT............read....imagine....consider....celebrate!

The Great King!

 The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord;
    the earth and all who live on it are his.
He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth
    and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.

Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill?
    Who may enter his holy Temple?
Those who are pure in act and in thought,
    who do not worship idols
    or make false promises.
The Lord will bless them and save them;
    God will declare them innocent.
Such are the people who come to God,
    who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, victorious in battle.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
The triumphant Lord—he is the great king!

3rd November   and 8th October, 2023

With the events of 2 Samuel chapter 6 still in mind......a psalm of triumphant worship!

As you read these words....let your mind paint new pictures!!

Psalm 24

Of David. A psalm.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not trust in an idol
    or swear by a false god.

They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face, God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty—
    he is the King of glory.

2nd August and 11th September, 2023

And so I find myself back at Psalm 18....the wet July and grizzly August are behind us and the very warm September is surprisingly here (how there are parts of Europe that would love some of our weather!).

It has been a strange month to be honest....and I could do with a holiday on a desert isalnd!!

Psalm 18 is my go-to psalm at such a time.....and will be our food for thought in this issue....

Let me invite you to sit down, open your Bible or Bible app, and pause with God in these honest words of faith and trial....

How I love you, Lord!
    You are my defender.

The Lord is my protector;
    he is my strong fortress.
My God is my protection,
    and with him I am safe.
He protects me like a shield;
    he defends me and keeps me safe.
I call to the Lord,
    and he saves me from my enemies.
Praise the Lord!

The danger of death was all around me;
    the waves of destruction rolled over me.
The danger of death was around me,
    and the grave set its trap for me.
In my trouble I called to the Lord;
    I called to my God for help.
In his temple he heard my voice;
    he listened to my cry for help.

Then the earth trembled and shook;
    the foundations of the mountains rocked and quivered,
    because God was angry.
Smoke poured out of his nostrils,
    a consuming flame and burning coals from his mouth.
He tore the sky open and came down
    with a dark cloud under his feet.

10 He flew swiftly on his winged creature;
    he traveled on the wings of the wind.
11 He covered himself with darkness;
    thick clouds, full of water, surrounded him.
12 Hailstones and flashes of fire
    came from the lightning before him
    and broke through the dark clouds.

13 Then the Lord thundered from the sky;

and the voice of the Most High was heard.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies;
    with flashes of lightning he sent them running.
15 The floor of the ocean was laid bare,
    and the foundations of the earth were uncovered,
when you rebuked your enemies, Lord,
    and roared at them in anger.

16 The Lord reached down from above and took hold of me;
    he pulled me out of the deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemies
    and from all those who hate me—
    they were too strong for me.
18 When I was in trouble, they attacked me,
    but the Lord protected me.
19 He helped me out of danger;
    he saved me because he was pleased with me.

20 The Lord rewards me because I do what is right;
    he blesses me because I am innocent.
21 I have obeyed the law of the Lord;
    I have not turned away from my God.
22 I have observed all his laws;
    I have not disobeyed his commands.
23 He knows that I am faultless,
    that I have kept myself from doing wrong.
24 And so he rewards me because I do what is right,
    because he knows that I am innocent.

25 Lord, you are faithful to those who are faithful to you;
    completely good to those who are perfect.
26 You are pure to those who are pure,
    but hostile to those who are wicked.
27 You save those who are humble,
    but you humble those who are proud.

28 Lord, you give me light;
    you dispel my darkness.
29 You give me strength to attack my enemies
    and power to overcome their defenses.

30 This God—how perfect are his deeds!
    How dependable his words!
He is like a shield
    for all who seek his protection.
31 The Lord alone is God;
    God alone is our defense.
32 He is the God who makes me strong,
    who makes my pathway safe.
33 He makes me sure-footed as a deer;
    he keeps me safe on the mountains.
34 He trains me for battle,
    so that I can use the strongest bow.

35 Lord, you protect me and save me;
    your care has made me great,
    and your power has kept me safe.
36 You have kept me from being captured,
    and I have never fallen.
37 I pursue my enemies and catch them;
    I do not stop until I destroy them.
38 I strike them down, and they cannot rise;
    they lie defeated before me.
39 You give me strength for the battle
    and victory over my enemies.
40 You make my enemies run from me;
    I destroy those who hate me.
41 They cry for help, but no one saves them;
    they call to the Lord, but he does not answer.
42 I crush them, so that they become like dust
    which the wind blows away.
I trample on them like mud in the streets.

43 You saved me from a rebellious people
    and made me ruler over the nations;
    people I did not know have now become my subjects.
44 Foreigners bow before me;
    when they hear me, they obey.
45 They lose their courage
    and come trembling from their fortresses.

46 The Lord lives! Praise my defender!
    Proclaim the greatness of the God who saves me.
47 He gives me victory over my enemies;
    he subdues the nations under me
48     and saves me from my foes.

Lord, you give me victory over my enemies
    and protect me from violent people.
49 And so I praise you among the nations;
    I sing praises to you.

50 God gives great victories to his king;
    he shows constant love to the one he has chosen,
    to David and his descendants forever.

There is no shortage of Psalms to help us slow down....and take time-out with God....

Perhaps you will turn to Psalm 23 - the shepherd's psalm..... and picture those images.....and slow down with the Good Shepherd at each verse....

Or maybe you turn to Psalm 42.....a longing to be with God.....and the words perfectly express where you are at.....

Or Psalms 62 and 63.........prayers for rest......in body, mind and spirit....

Why not read one a week....in a different version from what you usually use.....and invite God the Holy Spirit to feed you and fill you and refresh you.....

A Kingdom Psalm   -   Psalm 95

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;

    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.

For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

As you read and consider these words......

* which ones stay with you?

* what does Psalm 95 teach you/remind you about the LORD God?

* what do the words tell you about God's Kingdom rule on earth - and in heaven?

I make no apologies for taking you back to my Psalm - Psalm 18......a part of the Bible that I have held onto anew since 2000 and that my mum turned to in 2015 when dad died.

I invite you to sit with these words....and ponder them....David's experiences.....and what God is saying to you today.....

My Psalm for Retreat  -  Psalm 26

I took myself away on retreat last month - to lovely, quiet Kinnoull Monastery in Perth.

Psalm 26 was my choice of challenge for myself..... I encourage you to sit with God and ponder these words from the Contemporary English Version....

Vindicate me, O Lord,
    for I have walked in my integrity,
    and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
    test my heart and my mind.
For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
    and I walk in your faithfulness.

I do not sit with men of falsehood,
    nor do I consort with hypocrites.
I hate the assembly of evildoers,
    and I will not sit with the wicked.

I wash my hands in innocence
    and go around your altar, O Lord,
proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,
    and telling all your wondrous deeds.

Lord, I love the habitation of your house
    and the place where your glory dwells.
Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,
    nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
10 in whose hands are evil devices,
    and whose right hands are full of bribes.

11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
    redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground;
    in the great assembly I will bless the Lord

A Psalm for Time-out with God

I found myself first pausing at Psalm 23....but then lingering longer on the words of Psalm 84 below.... taking time to slow down in God's Presence.......and consider who He is.....and what blessings He wants to give... I can but encourage you to do so too at this time......

Lord God All-Powerful,
    your temple is so lovely!
Deep in my heart I long
    for your temple,
and with all that I am
    I sing joyful songs to you.

Lord God All-Powerful,
    my King and my God,
sparrows find a home
    near your altars;
swallows build nests there
    to raise their young.

You bless everyone
who lives in your house,
    and they sing your praises.
You bless all who depend
    on you for their strength
and all who deeply desire
    to visit your temple.
When they reach Dry Valley,
    springs start flowing,
and the autumn rain fills it
    with pools of water.
Your people grow stronger,
and you, the God of gods,
    will be seen in Zion.

Lord God All-Powerful,
the God of Jacob,
    please answer my prayer!
You are the shield
    that protects your people,
and I am your chosen one.
    Won't you smile on me?

10 One day in your temple
is better than a thousand
    anywhere else.
I would rather serve
    in your house,
than live in the homes
    of the wicked.

11 Our Lord and our God,
you are like the sun
    and also like a shield.
You treat us with kindness
    and with honor,
never denying any good thing
    to those who live right.

12 Lord God All-Powerful,
you bless everyone
    who trusts you.

(part of) A Psalm for the Year Ahead

Psalm 119 verses 105-112 seem relevant as we step into the year ahead....

Take time to read slowly.....ponder the words....consider the truths behind the words.....and make your choice at the crossroads.....

Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
    that I will follow your righteous laws.
107 I have suffered much;
    preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
108 Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,
    and teach me your laws.
109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands,
    I will not forget your law.
110 The wicked have set a snare for me,
    but I have not strayed from your precepts.
111 Your statutes are my heritage forever;
    they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees
    to the very end.

A Psalm for ADVENT  -   Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty—
    he is the King of glory.

(part of) Psalm 18......verses 25-29

This is God, the Living and True God......

This was David's experience of Him......

Is it yours at this time?

To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
    to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure you show yourself pure,
    but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27 You save the humble
    but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.

28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
    my God turns my darkness into light.

29 With your help I can advance against a troop;
    with my God I can scale a wall.

30th September, 2022

A Psalm for me.....and you

As I approach a significant birthday this coming month, please allow me to once again to share the words and experiences of PSALM 18 with you......honest.....meaningful.....encouraging......challenging.....

May this God be your God.

I love you, Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
    and I have been saved from my enemies.

The cords of death entangled me;
    the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called to the Lord;
    I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
    my cry came before him, into his ears.

The earth trembled and quaked,
    and the foundations of the mountains shook;
    they trembled because he was angry.
Smoke rose from his nostrils;
    consuming fire came from his mouth,
    burning coals blazed out of it.
He parted the heavens and came down;
    dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim and flew;
    he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
    the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
    with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven;

the voice of the Most High resounded.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,
    with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
    and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, Lord,
    at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
    he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
    from my foes, who were too strong for me.

18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
    he rescued me because he delighted in me.

20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
    according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
    I am not guilty of turning from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;
    I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless before him
    and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
    to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure you show yourself pure,
    but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27 You save the humble
    but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
    my God turns my darkness into light.

29 With your help I can advance against a troop;
    with my God I can scale a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect:
    The Lord’s word is flawless;
    he shields all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?
    And who is the Rock except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength
    and keeps my way secure.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
    he causes me to stand on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for battle;
    my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

35 You make your saving help my shield,
    and your right hand sustains me;
    your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
    I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them so that they could not rise;
    they fell beneath my feet.
39 You armed me with strength for battle;
    you humbled my adversaries before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
    and I destroyed my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
    to the Lord, but he did not answer.
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;

I trampled them like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
    you have made me the head of nations.
People I did not know now serve me,
44     foreigners cower before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;
    they come trembling from their strongholds.

46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
    Exalted be God my Savior!
47 He is the God who avenges me,
    who subdues nations under me,
48     who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
    from a violent man you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;

I will sing the praises of your name
.

50 He gives his king great victories;
    he shows unfailing love to his anointed,
    to David and to his descendants forever.

A Psalm for our times.......PSALM 24

A psalm to lift our eyes upwards as we consider all that is happening in our world at this time

The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord;
    the earth and all who live on it are his.
He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth
    and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.

Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill?
    Who may enter his holy Temple?
Those who are pure in act and in thought,
    who do not worship idols
    or make false promises.
The Lord will bless them and save them;
    God will declare them innocent.
Such are the people who come to God,
    who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, victorious in battle.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
The triumphant Lord—he is the great king!

A Psalm for the Summer

A psalm by David to be tasted and enjoyed.... from the Contemporary English Version

The Good Shepherd

You, Lord, are my shepherd.
    I will never be in need.
You let me rest in fields
    of green grass.
You lead me to streams
of peaceful water,
    and you refresh my life.

You are true to your name,
and you lead me
    along the right paths.
I may walk through valleys
as dark as death,
    but I won't be afraid.
You are with me,
and your shepherd's rod
    makes me feel safe.

You treat me to a feast,
    while my enemies watch.
You honor me as your guest,
and you fill my cup
    until it overflows.
Your kindness and love
will always be with me
    each day of my life,
and I will live forever
    in your house, Lord.

A Psalm for May  -   Psalm 95

In these days of turmoil in parts of our world....a reminder to look upward....

Come, let us praise the Lord!
    Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us!
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and sing joyful songs of praise.
For the Lord is a mighty God,
    a mighty king over all the gods.
He rules over the whole earth,
    from the deepest caves to the highest hills.
He rules over the sea, which he made;
    the land also, which he himself formed.

Come, let us bow down and worship him;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
He is our God;
    we are the people he cares for,
    the flock for which he provides.

Listen today to what he says:
“Don't be stubborn, as your ancestors were at Meribah,
    as they were that day in the desert at Massah.
There they put me to the test and tried me,
    although they had seen what I did for them.
10 For forty years I was disgusted with those people.
    I said, ‘How disloyal they are!
    They refuse to obey my commands.’
11 I was angry and made a solemn promise:
    ‘You will never enter the land
    where I would have given you rest.’”

A Psalm for April  -  PSALM 22

As we think about Jesus......as we think about the times we complain.....

A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise

 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
I have cried desperately for help,
    but still it does not come.
During the day I call to you, my God,
    but you do not answer;
I call at night,
    but get no rest.
But you are enthroned as the Holy One,
    the one whom Israel praises.
Our ancestors put their trust in you;
    they trusted you, and you saved them.
They called to you and escaped from danger;
    they trusted you and were not disappointed.

But I am no longer a human being; I am a worm,
    despised and scorned by everyone!
All who see me make fun of me;
    they stick out their tongues and shake their heads.
“You relied on the Lord,” they say.
    “Why doesn't he save you?
If the Lord likes you,
    why doesn't he help you?”

It was you who brought me safely through birth,
    and when I was a baby, you kept me safe.
10 I have relied on you since the day I was born,
    and you have always been my God.
11 Do not stay away from me!
    Trouble is near,
    and there is no one to help.

12 Many enemies surround me like bulls;
    they are all around me,
    like fierce bulls from the land of Bashan.
13 They open their mouths like lions,
    roaring and tearing at me.

14 My strength is gone,
    gone like water spilled on the ground.
All my bones are out of joint;
    my heart is like melted wax.
15 My throat is as dry as dust,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You have left me for dead in the dust.

16 An evil gang is around me;
    like a pack of dogs they close in on me;
    they tear at my hands and feet.
17 All my bones can be seen.
    My enemies look at me and stare.
18 They gamble for my clothes
    and divide them among themselves.

19 Lord, don't stay away from me!
    Come quickly to my rescue!
20 Save me from the sword;
    save my life from these dogs.
21 Rescue me from these lions;
    I am helpless before these wild bulls.

22 I will tell my people what you have done;
    I will praise you in their assembly:
23 “Praise him, you servants of the Lord!
    Honor him, you descendants of Jacob!
    Worship him, you people of Israel!
24 He does not neglect the poor or ignore their suffering;
    he does not turn away from them,
    but answers when they call for help.”

25 In the full assembly I will praise you for what you have done;
    in the presence of those who worship you
    I will offer the sacrifices I promised.
26 The poor will eat as much as they want;
    those who come to the Lord will praise him.
May they prosper forever!

27 All nations will remember the Lord.
    From every part of the world they will turn to him;
    all races will worship him.
28 The Lord is king,
    and he rules the nations.

29 All proud people will bow down to him;
    all mortals will bow down before him.
30 Future generations will serve him;
    they will speak of the Lord to the coming generation.
31 People not yet born will be told:
    “The Lord saved his people.”

A Psalm for Lent...  A Psalm for Ukraine...

PSALM 139

Words of honesty

Words of prayer

 Lord, you have examined me and you know me.
You know everything I do;
    from far away you understand all my thoughts.
You see me, whether I am working or resting;
    you know all my actions.
Even before I speak,
    you already know what I will say.
You are all around me on every side;
    you protect me with your power.
Your knowledge of me is too deep;
    it is beyond my understanding.

Where could I go to escape from you?
    Where could I get away from your presence?
If I went up to heaven, you would be there;
    if I lay down in the world of the dead, you would be there.
If I flew away beyond the east
    or lived in the farthest place in the west,
10 you would be there to lead me,
    you would be there to help me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
    or the light around me to turn into night,
12 but even darkness is not dark for you,
    and the night is as bright as the day.
    Darkness and light are the same to you.

13 You created every part of me;
    you put me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because you are to be feared;
    all you do is strange and wonderful.
    I know it with all my heart.
15 When my bones were being formed,
    carefully put together in my mother's womb,
when I was growing there in secret,
    you knew that I was there—
16     you saw me before I was born.
The days allotted to me
    had all been recorded in your book,
    before any of them ever began.

17 O God, how difficult I find your thoughts;
    how many of them there are!
18 If I counted them, they would be more than the grains of sand.
    When I awake, I am still with you.

19 O God, how I wish you would kill the wicked!
    How I wish violent people would leave me alone!
20 They say wicked things about you;

they speak evil things against your name.
21 Lord, how I hate those who hate you!
    How I despise those who rebel against you!
22 I hate them with a total hatred;
    I regard them as my enemies.

23 Examine me, O God, and know my mind;
    test me, and discover my thoughts.
24 Find out if there is any evil in me

and guide me in the everlasting way.

Psalm 123....

Words that lift our eyes upward....away from......

Words that speak of God's mercy...

Words that speak of those who are arrogant and proud....

God's mercy is available to you and me....now....

Ask

Receive

I lift up my eyes to you,
    to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
    as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
    till he shows us his mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,
    for we have endured no end of contempt.
We have endured no end
    of ridicule from the arrogant,
    of contempt from the proud.

A Psalm at the start of the year   -    PSALM 1

Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither –
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

10th December, 2021

A Psalm for Christmas

As you draw closer to CHRISTmas Day...let me invite you to pause and make way for the King of kings!

The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord;
    the earth and all who live on it are his.
He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth
    and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.

Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill?
    Who may enter his holy Temple?
Those who are pure in act and in thought,
    who do not worship idols
    or make false promises.
The Lord will bless them and save them;
    God will declare them innocent.
Such are the people who come to God,
    who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, victorious in battle.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
The triumphant Lord—he is the great king!

PSALM 24 from the Good News Translation

October 2021

The Psalms have always been with me....from Psalm 121 being sung in school assemblies to Psalm 1 being sung in the church choir to Psalm 18 as I adjusted to a different life in Edinburgh.

Let me encourage you to take time and dig away over the past 84 issues....and feed on the words and truths and emotions and experiences of the many psalms covered in these 6 years.

There is a wide range of psalms.

There is but one God in them all.

Friday 13th September, 2021

There are several times in the Psalms when we are reminded to Pause as we Pray - a useful exercise one day to find them?

Let me take you this time to one part of one verse in one Psalm...

'Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.'

Psalm 37 verse 7a

Not easy if we are honest with ourselves most days.

Being still.

In God's presence.

Waiting.

Patiently.

For Him to speak or act.

A good practice to develop before we ask or seek or knock or receive from Him.

Let me encourage this practice as you turn to prayer each day.

'Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.'

As a smaller Link/House group some of us have been praying through a few of the Psalms in 2021.

Let me therefore encourage you to Pause with God for some moments, sitting comfortably or perhaps taking a quiet walk away from familiar surroundings.

Ackowledge His presence.

Wait for His voice.

Be still and know that He is the LORD God.

And pray through a Psalm with God.......maybe 84? 62? 23? 19? 1?

Thursday 13th May, 2021

A Psalm of David - a king for the King.

Psalm 29 - to be read with eyes and ears open and imagination!

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to his name;

worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,

Sirion[b] like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, ‘Glory!’

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord is enthroned as King for ever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Monday 19th April, 2021

I make no apology for returning to the same psalm below - 22.

When we consider the themes of Death and Resurrection surely no other psalm conveys the agony, the pain, the shame of death upon that cross for Jesus of Nazareth.

Without a human death there could be no divine resurrection.

Without the broken body it makes the physical resurrection less miraculous.

Thursday 11th March, 2021

A Psalm to consider for Lent and Easter as we think of Jesus and the Cross

Psalm 22 -  from The Message version

God, God . . . my God!
    Why did you dump me
    miles from nowhere?
Doubled up with pain, I call to God
    all the day long. No answer. Nothing.
I keep at it all night, tossing and turning.

3-5 And you! Are you indifferent, above it all,
    leaning back on the cushions of Israel’s praise?
We know you were there for our parents:
    they cried for your help and you gave it;
    they trusted and lived a good life.

6-8 And here I am, a nothing—an earthworm,
    something to step on, to squash.
Everyone pokes fun at me;
    they make faces at me, they shake their heads:
“Let’s see how God handles this one;
    since God likes him so much, let him help him!”

9-11 And to think you were midwife at my birth,
    setting me at my mother’s breasts!
When I left the womb you cradled me;
    since the moment of birth you’ve been my God.
Then you moved far away
    and trouble moved in next door.
I need a neighbor.

12-13 Herds of bulls come at me,
    the raging bulls stampede,
Horns lowered, nostrils flaring,
    like a herd of buffalo on the move.

14-15 I’m a bucket kicked over and spilled,
    every joint in my body has been pulled apart.
My heart is a blob
    of melted wax in my gut.
I’m dry as a bone,
    my tongue black and swollen.
They have laid me out for burial
    in the dirt.

16-18 Now packs of wild dogs come at me;
    thugs gang up on me.
They pin me down hand and foot,
    and lock me in a cage—a bag
Of bones in a cage, stared at
    by every passerby.
They take my wallet and the shirt off my back,
    and then throw dice for my clothes.

19-21 You, God—don’t put off my rescue!
    Hurry and help me!
Don’t let them cut my throat;
    don’t let those mongrels devour me.
If you don’t show up soon,
    I’m done for—gored by the bulls,
    meat for the lions.

22-24 Here’s the story I’ll tell my friends when they come to worship,
    and punctuate it with Hallelujahs:
Shout Hallelujah, you God-worshipers;
    give glory, you sons of Jacob;
    adore him, you daughters of Israel.
He has never let you down,
    never looked the other way
    when you were being kicked around.
He has never wandered off to do his own thing;
    he has been right there, listening.

25-26 Here in this great gathering for worship
    I have discovered this praise-life.
And I’ll do what I promised right here
    in front of the God-worshipers.
Down-and-outers sit at God’s table
    and eat their fill.
Everyone on the hunt for God
    is here, praising him.
“Live it up, from head to toe.
    Don’t ever quit!”

27-28 From the four corners of the earth
    people are coming to their senses,
    are running back to God.
Long-lost families
    are falling on their faces before him.
God has taken charge;
    from now on he has the last word.

29 All the power-mongers are before him
    —worshiping!
All the poor and powerless, too
    —worshiping!
Along with those who never got it together
    —worshiping!

30-31 Our children and their children
    will get in on this
As the word is passed along
    from parent to child.
Babies not yet conceived
    will hear the good news—
    that God does what he says.

A Psalm for 2021 - all we need for the New Year...

Psalm 23

Good News Translation

The Lord Our Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd;

You prepare a banquet for me,
    where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honored guest
    and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
    and your house will be my home as long as I live.

As you dig around the rest of the Seeds here....may you discover afresh the blessings of Psalm 23 for anytime of the year....

Sunday 29th November, 2020

On this first Sunday of Advent let me encourage you to pause now and make room for the King of kings before all the busyness and festivities take over!

Psalm 24 is well worth a timely visit....

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
    The world and all its people belong to him.
For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas
    and built it on the ocean depths.

Who may climb the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?
Only those whose hands and hearts are pure,
    who do not worship idols
    and never tell lies.
They will receive the Lord’s blessing
    and have a right relationship with God their savior.
Such people may seek you
    and worship in your presence, O God of Jacob.

Open up, ancient gates!
    Open up, ancient doors,
    and let the King of glory enter.
Who is the King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty;
    the Lord, invincible in battle.
Open up, ancient gates!
    Open up, ancient doors,
    and let the King of glory enter.
10 Who is the King of glory?
    The Lord of Heaven’s Armies—
    he is the King of glory.

His faithful love endures forever.
11 He brought Israel out of Egypt.
His faithful love endures forever.
12 He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm.
His faithful love endures forever.

13 Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea.[a]
His faithful love endures forever.
14 He led Israel safely through,
His faithful love endures forever.
15 but he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.
His faithful love endures forever.
16 Give thanks to him who led his people through the wilderness.
His faithful love endures forever.

17 Give thanks to him who struck down mighty kings.
His faithful love endures forever.
18 He killed powerful kings—
His faithful love endures forever.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites,
His faithful love endures forever.
20 and Og king of Bashan.
His faithful love endures forever.
21 God gave the land of these kings as an inheritance—
His faithful love endures forever.
22 a special possession to his servant Israel.
His faithful love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our weakness.
His faithful love endures forever.
24 He saved us from our enemies.
His faithful love endures forever.
25 He gives food to every living thing.
His faithful love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His faithful love endures forever.

The Psalms

Let me invite you to re-read the Introduction above....to browse the many seeds sown below in a Bible book that is so encouraging, so honest, so challenging, so refreshing....and to read below Psalm 1 from The Passion Translation.      May the Psalms bring you many fruitful blessings - so many that they overflow to others!

What delight comes to the one who follows God’s ways!
He won’t walk in step with the wicked,
nor share the sinner’s way,
nor be found sitting in the scorner’s seat.
His pleasure and passion is remaining true to the Word of “I Am,”

meditating day and night in the true revelation of light.[c]
He will be standing firm like a flourishing tree
planted by God’s design,
deeply rooted by the brooks of bliss,
bearing fruit in every season of his life.
He is never dry, never fainting,

ever blessed, ever prosperous.[e]
But how different are the wicked.
All they are is dust in the wind—
driven away to destruction!
The wicked will not endure the day of judgment,
for God will not defend them.
Nothing they do will succeed or endure for long,
for they have no part with those who walk in truth.
But how different it is for the righteous!
The Lord embraces their paths as they move forward
while the way of the wicked leads only to doom.

A Psalm of Suffering

Words said and written by David

Jesus spoke some of them on the Cross.

Psalm 22

Let me encourage you to pause and read and consider them afresh now..in these days..

God is never far away.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
    Why are you so far away when I groan for help?
Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer.
    Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praises of Israel.
Our ancestors trusted in you,
    and you rescued them.
They cried out to you and were saved.
    They trusted in you and were never disgraced.

But I am a worm and not a man.
    I am scorned and despised by all!
Everyone who sees me mocks me.
    They sneer and shake their heads, saying,
“Is this the one who relies on the Lord?
    Then let the Lord save him!
If the Lord loves him so much,
    let the Lord rescue him!”

Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb
    and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.
10 I was thrust into your arms at my birth.
    You have been my God from the moment I was born.

11 Do not stay so far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and no one else can help me.
12 My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls;
    fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!
13 Like lions they open their jaws against me,
    roaring and tearing into their prey.
14 My life is poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax,
    melting within me.
15 My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay.
    My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
    You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.
16 My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs;
    an evil gang closes in on me.

They have pierced[a] my hands and feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
    My enemies stare at me and gloat.
18 They divide my garments among themselves

and throw dice[b] for my clothing.

19 Lord, do not stay far away!
    You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!
20 Save me from the sword;
    spare my precious life from these dogs.
21 Snatch me from the lion’s jaws
    and from the horns of these wild oxen.

22 I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.[c]
    I will praise you among your assembled people.
23 Praise the Lord, all you who fear him!
    Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob!
    Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy.
    He has not turned his back on them,
    but has listened to their cries for help.

25 I will praise you in the great assembly.
    I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied.
    All who seek the Lord will praise him.
    Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy.
27 The whole earth will acknowledge the Lord and return to him.
    All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
28 For royal power belongs to the Lord.
    He rules all the nations.

29 Let the rich of the earth feast and worship.
    Bow before him, all who are mortal,
    all whose lives will end as dust.
30 Our children will also serve him.
    Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.
31 His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born.
    They will hear about everything he has done.

In this issue I want to take you to Psalm 18.....my go-to psalm so many times.

We will revisit the verses - David's story of faith in God - in other seeds but, for now, let me encourage you to sit back and read through the words....and consider all that is said here.

PSALM 18

New International Version (NIV)

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

I love you, Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

    my shield[b] and the horn[c] of my salvation, my stronghold.

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
    and I have been saved from my enemies.
The cords of death entangled me;
    the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called to the Lord;
    I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
    my cry came before him, into his ears.
The earth trembled and quaked,
    and the foundations of the mountains shook;
    they trembled because he was angry.
Smoke rose from his nostrils;
    consuming fire came from his mouth,
    burning coals blazed out of it.
He parted the heavens and came down;
    dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim and flew;
    he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
    the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
    with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven;

    the voice of the Most High resounded.[d]
14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,
    with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
    and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, Lord,
    at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
    he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
    from my foes, who were too strong for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
    he rescued me because he delighted in me.

20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
    according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
    I am not guilty of turning from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;
    I have not turned away from his decrees.

28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
    my God turns my darkness into light.

29 With your help I can advance against a troop[e];
    with my God I can scale a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect:
    The Lord’s word is flawless;
    he shields all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?
    And who is the Rock except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength
    and keeps my way secure.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
    he causes me to stand on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for battle;
    my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You make your saving help my shield,
    and your right hand sustains me;
    your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
    I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them so that they could not rise;
    they fell beneath my feet.
39 You armed me with strength for battle;
    you humbled my adversaries before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
    and I destroyed my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
    to the Lord, but he did not answer.
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;

    I trampled them[f] like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
    you have made me the head of nations.
People I did not know now serve me,
44     foreigners cower before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;
    they come trembling from their strongholds.

46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
    Exalted be God my Savior!
47 He is the God who avenges me,
    who subdues nations under me,
48     who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
    from a violent man you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing the praises of your name.

50 He gives his king great victories;
    he shows unfailing love to his anointed,
    to David and to his descendants forever.

Amen?

Amen!!

PSALM 121

Do you have memories from school assembly days?

Did your school have morning assembly??

Psalm 121 is mine – we sang it soo many times in the morning assembly at High School. I can still picture the school chaplain, Rev Dr Morris, or the Rector announcing it after all these years!

At home in Glasgow, the Campsie Hills were not that far away.

Here, at home in Bilston we have the Pentland Hills almost within touching distance from our kitchen window.

The psalmist was looking up at the hills surrounding him, wondering where and when his help was coming from.

We all have moments or days like that.

Psalm 121 is for us.

There are nights we have real trouble sleeping.

There is so much on our minds in these days.

Psalm 121 is for us.

There are times we are struggling along, or perhaps it is someone we love or know,  unable to be at rest in the comings and goings of daily living.

Psalm 121 is for them and for us.

In my study Bible I have hand-written the heading ‘God’s consistent care’ .

That is the God of Psalm 121 – consistently caring for us.

This is a great psalm to hold onto through a restless night.

This is a great psalm to use when praying for someone who is needing a helping hand from God Himself.

Whether you have sung or read Psalm 121 before, at assembly, church or home these eight verses are well worth reading and singing again and again - even in lockdown!

Friday 15th May, 2020

A familiar psalm to take time with.......green pastures and sad valleys.

May you walk with the Good Shepherd in these days...and allow Him to carry you when you can walk no further....

A psalm of David. Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

  he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

Wednesday 8th April, 2020

A psalm to ponder as we journey through Easter weekend.

A psalm of isolation from David.

A psalm quoted by Jesus on the Cross.

Psalm 22 New International Version (NIV)

A psalm of David.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me,
    so far from my cries of anguish?
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
    by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
    you are the one Israel praises.

In you our ancestors put their trust;
    they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man,
    scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
    they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
“He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
    “let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
    since he delights in him.”

Yet you brought me out of the womb;
    you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
    from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11 Do not be far from me,
    for trouble is near
    and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me;
    strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
    open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.

My heart has turned to wax;
    it has melted within me.
15 My mouth
is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
    a pack of villains encircles me;
    they pierc
my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
    people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
    You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my people;
    in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
    Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or scorned
    the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
    but has listened to his cry for help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
    before those who fear you
I will fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek the Lord will praise him—
    may your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth
    will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the Lord
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
    all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
    those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him;
    future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness,
    declaring to a people yet unborn:
    He has done it!

Psalm 119

Psalm 119 deserves a whole series to itself! It is one very very  long psalm.

22 sections.  176 verses.  A lot of words to consider!!

There is one consistent theme however – God’s perfect law.

Some of us appreciate laws, they keep us on the right road.

Others of us don’t like being told what to do!

There is a huge contrast between the first and last verses of this psalm.

Read them now and consider the difference.

Which one are you today as you read this?

We all long to experience God’s blessings in our lives, but it does come with a condition - to follow God’s path of righteousness.

By the time we read through to verse 176 we realise that we have all failed in one way or another.

There are some gems in this psalm for sure, however.

Verses 9-16,  25-32,  68,  105-112,  and 140-142 are just a few to look at.

However, this is why God sent Jesus.

We cannot daily keep God’s laws by ourselves.

We fail. We wander. We do our own thing.

We need a Saviour, a Guide. We need Someone to strengthen and equip us so that we are able to do what the LORD requires of us, as His people.

Psalm 119 may be very very long – but it is a great read.

There are verses here that come alive when God Himself is with us to help us make the words a living reality.

So....take a deep breath....work your way through this psalm, maybe daily over a month....celebrate God’s perfect ways....and learn how to make them a reality in daily living in and through Christ Jesus, Saviour and Lord, with the Spirit’s help.

(Romans chapters 3 and 6 are worth a read.)

Thursday 28th November, 2019

Let me invite you to reach out for your Bible....open to Psalm 24 at this time of the year...and pause in the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Let the words paint images in your mind.

Let the King in to your circumstances at this time.

Let Advent be a time of meaningful hope!

Psalm 118

Move over Braveheart!!

This is truly a magnificent battlefield psalm.

It is action-packed indeed, filled with dramatic scenes of fighting and then the images of entering through the gates of a mighty fortress or castle!

There are enemies being fought and defeated.

There is the scene of being surrounded.

The psalmist is even pushed back.

He is also being disciplined by his God.

But there are shouts of joy above the noise of battle

and a triumphant victorious entrance!

Great stuff eh?!

Notice that the enemies defeated in verses 10-12 are cut off in God’s Name.

The battle is not won for my sake or by my efforts.

We are energised by faith in our Living God to fight the good fight.

Is there anything in our lives that needs to be cut off for God’s sake?

A habit?  A friend?  A possession?

Being surrounded and pushed back does not mean we are defeated. These things happen in the heat of battle and there will be days we feel like this.

However we must keep our eyes on the King, His bigger understanding of the battle already won and not rely on our feelings.

Verse 13 has a great but in it don’t you think?

And the entrance through the gates?

King Jesus is ready to open the gates to absolutely anyone who asks.

Look at Matthew 7 verses 7-11, Revelation 3 v 20 and 22 v 17.

So ask and enter – with a shout of thanksgiving!

And as we move on and go into the day, or venture out in service or battle for the LORD our God, may the words of verses 25-28 in Psalm 118 be ours.

Amen we shout?    Amen!!

Friday 16th August, 2019

At this time of family grieving for us, let me invite you to join us on the journey of Psalm 23....

and to pause where you want.....to spend time with God.... in the fields....at the fresh water....

on the right path...in the darkness....at the banquet....with the hope of life ahead.....

Psalm 23 Good News Translation (GNT)

The Lord Our Shepherd[a]

The Lord is my shepherd;

You prepare a banquet for me,
    where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honored guest
    and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
    and your house will be my home as long as I live

PSALM 116

There are days that come our way when the waters around us appear to be stronger.  We are not in immediate danger but we sense the waves have increased. They are causing us to worry or fear.  Perhaps it is the memory of past sin or an event that has been brought to our memory by another or by circumstances. Maybe, however, we have dipped our feet back into the murky waters. We feel anything but at peace right now even as we are reading these words. We cannot find rest in our minds, hearts and even our bodies ache.

And all the time we are standing safely on the shore.

The lifeboat has delivered us securely out of the danger we were in.

Yet, somehow, we are still affected by the danger of the past.

It haunts us. It unsettles us.

The drama of Psalm 116 is for us.

The danger was very real. Look at verses 3 and 8.

No-one can take the reality of trouble away from us.

And yet the Lifeboat of Heaven has rescued us – totally!

Read verses 1-2, 4 and 8.

The rescue did happen. It is a fact. Sin did trap us in complete danger but God has intervened. He heard our cry. He launched out in the boat of Grace with Christ Jesus as Pilot and the Holy Spirit as Navigator and He found us.

Maybe you need to read those last three lines again – and believe it is all real and true for you – maybe for the first time. God is not put off by the depths of our trouble, failings or guilt. He is well-able to reach us wherever we are and safely bring us ashore.  It worked for David. It has worked for me on more than one occasion. It has worked for so many down through the years ever since and the Lifeboat is always ready to go into action whenever the cry is heard!

Are you crying out for rescue even now? (verse 2)

Do you need re-assuring that you are safe? (verse 7)

Is God waiting for your life-response of thanks? (verses 12-19)

Call out and be ready to be saved!

Be at peace once more.

Give thanks to Him with a changed life and words of real gratitude!

Friday 7th June

 Psalm 107

I was always taught to say ‘thank-you’ after receiving a gift, whether it was for birthday, Christmas, Easter or another occasion.  I remember (reluctantly at times) sitting down to write those thank you letters after all the wrapping paper had been binned and the turkey eaten at Christmas time.

I know now it was right to tell the person who had given me my particular gift I was glad. I was enjoying it – but they had chosen and wrapped it just for me.

My two sons are getting better at this as they grow up – although with a little nudge in the right direction at times!

We all need a prompt sometimes to say thank-you.

Some people do forget  however – too occupied with the gift!!

Psalm 107 is Israel’s reminder to give thanks to God and the psalmist has given them six reasons to do so.

Verse 1.....God is good.

Verses 4-9.....God had literally led them to safety and even fed them.

Verses 10-16.....God had saved and rescued them, even though it was their own fault.

Verses 17-22.....God rescued them again – and again it was their fault!

Verses 23-32......God guided them through the stormy times – literally.

Verses 33-42.....God turned their desert into a lake of good things.

What are your reasons for giving thanks to God?

Have you said thank-you to Him recently?

For me, verses 28-32 were a God-moment when I read them again as I made my notes. I needed the storm within to be calmed and to be guided to a place of safety and refuge. When I was, I had to give my thanks to the One who had delivered me because I was losing my way on my own.

As you finally come to verse 43 I hope and pray that you have many reasons to be thankful to the God of Israel, learning from their mistakes and trusting more in the God who really does delight to give us good things in Christ Jesus.

Friday 10th May, 2019

As you read these words........I wonder what part of God's Word you read recently - hopefully today?

Do you keep a journal and record what God is saying to you, by His Spirit, from His written and living Word?

Do you have someone you share these treasures with?

Friday 12th April, 2019

Holy Week and Easter are just around the corner...and I found myself reading and considering Psalm 23 in one of the few quiet hours of this week.  It was good to slow down and take time out with the LORD my Good Shepherd and be reminded that He is with me today - and forever - and that He does provide and refresh and comfort.

As you enter Holy Week when have you planned to slow down, pause, remember and receive?

Is there a particular Psalm that would help you?

Psalm 23 is just one that awaits you.....

47.     Psalm 103

An awesome psalm – in so many ways.

I am looking again at this psalm on a muggy Friday morning at home.

It is good, yet humbling, to read these verses wherever you are and whatever your day is proving to be like.

Psalm 103 has the ability to change the landscape of our daily living for any of us – totally.

There is so much of God’s nature revealed here.

His forgiveness, healing, grace, justice, compassion and kingship are but some of the attributes mentioned here.

There is so much of His amazing grace at work here.

Time and time again David tells of how God deals with His people and it is not to punish them – it is to bless them, despite their errors and failures.

There is so much of heaven here.

The LORD’s righteousness, justice, eternal ways and angelic servants are all mentioned as God brings His heaven to earth.

There is a real sense of David’s personal testimony making it all so true.

He starts and ends with his own soul responding in praise to God for what He has done for him, Person-to-person.

I would definitely add my own ‘Amen!’ to that, David.

God really does forgive.

God really does not treat us as our sins deserve, in Christ Jesus.

God really is King for ever.

God really does have angels serving Him.

God really does deserve my soul’s praise.

The God of Psalm 103 is an awesome God – in so many ways indeed!

‘Praise, my soul, the King of heaven’ indeed!

46.     Psalm 95

Come.

Come and sing.

Come and bow down.

Our worship to the LORD Almighty is a mix’n’match act of love.

There are times when Psalm 92 is so appropriate.

We sing for joy! We shout aloud our praise!

Music and singing go hand-in-hand with a swing!

Now look carefully at verses 1 and 2 of Psalm 95.

We want others to come with us into this arena of worship and for God to bless them as He has blessed us.

He is truly a great God. The King over all.

There are also times we need to put verses 6 and 7 into practice -

literally if we are physically able to do so is a good thing.

We need to learn to slow down the band.

Bowing down before the LORD God is to be part of our act of worship.

Kneeling in His presence is what He requires.

He is our God.   He has been so good to us His people.

We need to take time to acknowledge that.

Less words.       More reverence.

God knows what is in our hearts as we approach Him.

He knows if we are coming to worship Him for who He is.

He knows if we are in a hurry.

He knows if we have already chosen to listen to Him with ears closed.

Verses 8-11 are uncomfortable reading for sure.

Those people used to enter the place of worship....but....

Come and worship Him with me, right now. Tell Him what He wants to hear.

45.     Psalm 92

Some days you just want to burst into song!!

Some things happen and you start humming, whistling or singing a song of worship about how good God is.

This is Psalm 92!

The NIV says that it was earmarked for singing on the Sabbath –

but any day can be a song-day for God’s people!

Look at verse 2.  The song can be sung in the morning or in the evening.

The song has a personal touch to it. We sing in response to God’s goodness not because we feel good - verse 4.

Not everyone will join in singing however – verses 6 and 7.

There is a greater picture here than just about us. God is at work overcoming evil in our world – verses 9-11.

The song can be sung by anyone – age is not a barrier – verses 14 and 15.

We shouldn’t restrict new songs of worship to young people and those born earlier shouldn’t hold back their praise to their God! After all, many of them have been walking with Jesus longer than some of us have been living and they have many, many reasons to burst into songs of praise!

Next Sunday why not read Psalm 92 before you ‘go to church’ – and then every day, morning or evening, in the week afterwards.

It is such a good psalm indeed – and not just for the Sabbath me thinks.

(Similar readings?  Why not taste Psalms 96, 98, 100, 148 and 150;  Ephesians 5 verses 19 and 20)

44.         Psalm 91

Ohh this is good!

All sixteen verses should be read with a smile.

Yesterday I took time to read the psalm again as I sat in The Merlin on Morningside Road, Edinburgh, a Pub & Kitchen that is now under new management.  I thought that appropriate as I was reading.

The psalm met my needs yesterday and I ended up sharing with others in my church family and even on Facebook!

Read these verses and enjoy.

Are you resting in God’s goodness?

How about those traps and diseases in verse 3?

Could you choose between a shield or a city wall for protection? (v4)

Angels or arrows for travelling companions? (vs 5 + 11)

And what about those lions or snakes in verse 13!!

Times of trouble and trial will be around in our lives but in those times God Himself has promised to be with us. With us.

God knows we need Him. Verse 15 is quite clear. He is but a call away.

This is a lovely psalm about protection, rescue, trust, honour

and so much more!

However it all rests on verses 1 and 9.

Under new management.

We need to live in God’s presence if we are to experience His blessings.

We need to move home in a spiritual sense and start to live out His Kingdom will in our lives if we are to know the rest and rescue He alone gives.

Why don’t you give Him a call now (v15) and move in if you haven’t already done so – or maybe you need to move completely in - or even throw out some of the old baggage you brought with you?

For me, a city wall and some angels sounds pretty good and safe!

43.    Psalm 90

And so Book IV of the Psalms starts with a prayer of Moses.

(Yes that’s right – Moses.)

It is another psalm about time. God’s time and man’s time.

The Eternal God of verses 1 and 2.

The finite man of verse 3.

The time-chart held by the Living God in verses 4-6.

These are the facts.

How does it leave you feeling right now?

It gets better – or worse in fact.

Read verses 7-11.

Our years are seriously affected by our human condition – sin - and God Himself, the Holy One, cannot look upon us in His perfect light.

We are eternally doomed.

But – verse 12 brings a chink of light.

We read of compassion, love and favour in verses 13-17.

All is not lost for those who believe.

God’s people have hope above and beyond all time!

We can get it right.

We can worship the LORD instead of running away from Him.

We can have a lasting effect for good in this world.

Now how do you feel?

Which part of the psalm describes you best – merely human and without hope – or a sinner given hope for this life and the next by God Himself, according to His riches of salvation in Christ Jesus?

Friday 5th October, 2018

Three years later....I re-read the Introduction above - still true!

The Psalms still strike me as great honest stuff about human nature, God and the world - and we've only done 42 digs so far!

So let me encourage you to re-dig below in any of the 42 psalms we have visited ......including my fave of course

- Psalm 18.....and may you be fruitfully blessed!

42.     Psalm 86

Not every day is a Psalm 84 day.

Psalm 86 was not the bestest of days for David and it may be that today is not your best day of the week or month so far. There may be many reasons.

It could be our circumstances, others, health, job, finance or a transport nightmare.

It would appear that David’s problem was the group against him in verse 14.

Or was it?

At a first reading it may seem so. However what of the first thirteen verses?

What is the psalmist’s prayer request mostly about?

Himself.     His need for God’s mercy, forgiveness and love.    His failings.

The joy had gone out of his walk with God.

Yes, others were attacking him – verbally or physically – but his chief cry was to know God’s mercy and grace again.

There was a need.  There had been a break in the wall.

David readily acknowledges his own weakness in this psalm.

He is longing to know God’s hand of favour upon him once more.

Could this be a reason for your spiritual temperature right now?

I’m not saying it is. Circumstances etc may be the reason life is hard.

But what harm is a spiritual check-up if we feel ourselves healthy?

Is there a sin to be confessed?  A wrong to be put right?

A relationship to mend?

Verse 15 is so true – thankfully – and we should not put off coming to our God to put things right and to get His help to stay on the right path.

As a young man I thought I was always right. It was a family trait that I took to the nth degree. It has been a costly lesson over the years that only God is right.

As you read this psalm I urge you to put right anything that needs to be fixed – with God first and foremost, then family, friends, fellow Church members, neighbours, work colleagues, whoever  –  sooner rather than later.

Make verse 11 your goal today, tomorrow and every day.

41.    Psalm 84

After Psalm 18 this is probably next in my list of Top 10 Psalms...and a grand one to spend time with at this time of year - or any time!

Twelve verses full of wonderful truths, delightful imagery and all the blessings of God’s outrageously gracious treasure-chest!

Some psalms just speak for themselves – I believe this is such a one.

Take your time, reach for your Bible and read Psalm 84...slowly.

Enjoy it and get lost in all its wonder and worth!

As you do....here are some questions for your journey...

Do you long to spend time in God’s Presence? (vs 1+2)

Are you like the sparrow, safe and secure? (vs 3+4)

Are you on a spiritual pilgrimage, going from strength to strength? (vs 5-7)

How is your prayer list or journal doing these days? (vs 8+9)

Are you content serving God as doorkeeper? (v 10)

Do you identify with verses 11+12?

Are you in a good place with God at this moment in your life?

Can you count your daily blessings?

Ohh I could read this psalm over and over again!

Read Psalm 84 again with me and may it be the words of our prayers of worship, thanksgiving and longing to the LORD Himself.

Thank you, LORD God, for Psalm 84 soo much!

40.      Psalm 80

What a wonderful psalm to read after looking at Psalm 78!

After the history lesson this psalm takes us all back to the 3 R’s

*  Restore    *  Return   *  Revive

We are told that Psalm 80 is a psalm that was sung to a particular tune but it is also a psalm sung by a particular people – God’s People of Israel. This was not for them to use to taunt other nations who did not know God and needed His hand on them.  It is therefore not for us to use in praying for others, although it may be useful after God has worked in our hearts and minds and lives.

Restore us appears three times in this psalm.

There has been a loss, a failing, a backsliding, a wandering away.

There is now an emptiness.

Only God can restore and start the rebuilding process again – and He does.

Oh that the LORD God Almighty Himself would restore us again and again!

Return to us is the call of verse 14.

In wandering away from God, Israel had discovered that they were now looking at His back. They needed and wanted to see His face again.

When we fail God He is waiting and willing to return His favour to us, His amazing forgiveness in Christ Jesus

and the beauty of His Presence by the Holy Spirit.

Revive us is heard from the Israelites in verse 18.

They wanted more than just a lovely structure around them.

They were asking for revival, God’s own life breathing in and through them!

They wanted life and joy and hope and strength and all the colours of the rainbow to be their experience!!

What is your prayer from Psalm 80?

(Isaiah 58 and 59 – or Luke 15 -  are a good read at this point by the way.)

PSALM 82 - Good News Translation

God the Supreme Ruler[a]

God presides in the heavenly council;
    in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:
“You must stop judging unjustly;
    you must no longer be partial to the wicked!
Defend the rights of the poor and the orphans;
    be fair to the needy and the helpless.
Rescue them from the power of evil people.

“How ignorant you are! How stupid!
    You are completely corrupt,
    and justice has disappeared from the world.
‘You are gods,’ I said;
    ‘all of you are children of the Most High.’
But you will die like mortals;
    your life will end like that of any prince.”

Come, O God, and rule the world;
    all the nations are yours.

LORD God, we pray that Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will is done in our world as it is in heaven.

In Jesus' name,  Amen.

Psalm 76

I don’t think I had ever read Psalm 76 before. Oops.

I have had to read it a few times now to understand where the psalmist was coming from and what God might be saying to you and me through it.

Psalm 76.   Twelve verses.  Three parts.  Two selahs.   One song.

In the first three verses we are reminded that God is known among His people. In those days it was the nation of Israel and Jerusalem was the focal point.

Nowadays it is all who are saved through Christ Jesus and the Church is the focal point.

That’s quite an issue to ponder – when people ‘come to church’ they should see and find the Living God among His people.

Any thoughts so far?

In verses 4-10 the picture changes dramatically and we have a scene of battle and judgement and it is truly fearsome.

God is the God of amazing grace. Fact.

He is also the True Judge of all, the perfect One alone who is able to determine between right and wrong, goodness and evil and who alone can perfectly pass the sentence.

There will be a Day of Judgement for everyone. Everyone. Fact.

How do you react to this?

Finally, the last two verses bring us the truth that God is always reaching out.

Here ‘the neighbouring lands’ are to bring gifts to the LORD God.

John 3 v 16 is forever true and He uses us, even us, to reach others – including our neighbours, friends and family – so that they also may be a part of God’s people bringing Him gifts of praise and thanksgiving and service.

Have you prayed for and shared your faith with anyone recently?

Psalm 76.  Twelve verses.  Three parts.  One song.

Oh and those two selahs?

My dictionary says a selah is probably a musical term to help the leader direct the singers to raise their voices or perhaps take a pause. Sometimes we need to take a pause as we read the Bible and consider what God is saying....to us.

Selah.

   Psalm 75

This psalm is all about good time-keeping.

God’s timing is always spot on – have you noticed He is never late or too early. He may be a tad slow for some of us at times but it is actually a case of our timing being out.      We need to adjust to His ways.

He is working to a truly perfect schedule. His plan and purposes are always on time, His Kingdom time.

Read these ten verses (more than once) and then take the time to also look at.....

Ephesians 1 vs 3-14

Philippians 1 v12

Colossians 1 vs 3-24.

Now read Psalm 75 again.

Have you got it yet?  God is never late! He is never early!

Everything is timed to His purpose, His plan, His divine will.

Everything.

Everything.

The world – past, present and future.

My life.  Your life.  The lives of our families and neighbours.

The Day of Judgement.

Everything.

Christ Jesus is the crux of this Timepiece.

Jesus, the same yesterday, today and forever.

Everything makes sense to God now. It always has. It always will.

One day He will share it all with us all.

One day everything will fall into place. Everything.

Psalm 75 verse 1

Psalm 75 verse 9

Amen?   Amen!

------

 Psalm 73

The 150 psalms are divided into 5 mini-books and Psalm 73 starts off Book III.   It is a giant of a psalm and so often turned to when a believer is struggling along in this world, somewhat weighed down.

Verses 1-14 are one side of the coin and verses 15-28 the other.

I would say that which side lands face-up depends on who or what we desire more in this life.  Look at verse 25.  It is one of those verses that is both encouraging and uncomfortable. The words can make us full of hope or of guilt if there is someone or something we are desiring too much in our lives.

I remember a night at our family home when my electric blanket caught fire and, as the smoke filled my bedroom, I stood and looked at my vinyl collection even before I alerted anyone else in the house.

Look at verses 2 and 3.

How easy it can be to compare our lives and possessions to others – even those who have gained so much by wrongdoing.

There is a sense of a real struggle going on here for the psalmist. He is being very honest with himself, with God and with us now as the reader.

But.....it is as if he then puts on God’s 3D glasses.....and he sees the full picture.  Look at verse 17 and catch the image clearly in your mind.

The true eternal spiritual Kingdom reality of who is who and what is what is understood. The penny drops!

Verses 18-20 are not good news really.

Verses 21 and 22 are sheer honesty from a broken but forgiven sinner.

And verses 23-28? Woohoo – they are full of grace and goodness!

Look at verse 24...

verse 26...

and verse 28  (I love these words!).

This psalm is an open and honest testimony.

It is also a challenge for each one of us – who are we spending time with?

Who or what do we desire to have more of?

Are we glad to be near God and long for Him more and more?

-------

 PSALM 71

Definitely a psalm for one of those hard going days.

As I read these verses over I wasn’t quite sure if the psalmist is feeling his age catching up with him – what do you think?

Read Psalm 71 through carefully......and ask yourself these eleven questions......

* Where do I go to hide when the storm is brewing? (v1)

* Do I believe that God actually does listen to me? (v2)

* What are my youthful memories? (v5)

* Do I have good memories of my mother? (v6)

* Who are my enemies? (v10)

* Why did the psalmist have hope in verse 14?

* What had God taught the psalmist?  (v17)

* Who did I last speak to about God? (v18)

* Can I identify with verse 20 in any way?

* When did I last shout for joy? (v23)  * What verse, or verses, are most real for me from Psalm 71...and why?

  • Now find someone to share them with – whether you are young in years or that bit older!

    ------

Friday 22nd December, 2017..........Psalms 65 and 66 seem timely at this time of the year - when we feel overwhelmed with all that is happening at this time of the year - and when we all love an invitation!

Christmas blessings be yours!

Psalm 66

Whatever age we are, we all love an invitation!

It makes us feel special, wanted, loved.

The invitation could be to a party or concert, wedding or opening of a particular place.

Psalm 66 has two invitations for you!

You are invited to ‘Come and see...’ and ‘Come and listen...’

The first four verses are like the trumpet sounding before the invite is announced. They prepare us by telling us who the invitation is from and who it is all about.  The God of all the earth has called to us – yes us!

His people are the messenger. They invite you and I to stop what we are doing right now and give our attention to what He is doing and saying.

Some of us are easily stopped.

Some of us want to keep on doing our own thing.

Some of us are relieved that God would want to speak with us.

Some of us are unsure if we want to hear His Word.

When you read the psalm you will discover that God works for good.

You will also read that the psalmist’s own personal experience of God is one of answered prayers and undeserving love.

It is a good thing to make time each day to stop and come before the LORD, listening to His Word and considering what He is drawing our attention to in our lives, homes, nation and world.  It is also a good thing to share that with others, bringing them encouragement for the journey day-by-day.

They too love an invitation!

What has God been saying to you recently?

What have you seen Him do?

Who have you told?

(Psalm 34....verses 4....8....and 11 are also helpful reads at this point)

-------

Psalm 65

Feeling overwhelmed a bit today?
Or not even today – but for a while now?

Take a few minutes out of your schedule and enjoy this psalm.

It is a basket full of God’s goodness, jammed packed with good things.

Go on in – taste and see how good God is!

Did you catch the flavours of goodness, grace and greatness here?

Did you notice His awesome deeds – including outrageous forgiveness?

Do you feel blessed and filled?

(Be honest – God already knows what you were going to say.....)

The wonderful thing about God’s grace is that although we may have had our fill there is always more room for Him to work in us and there are more of His riches in Christ Jesus for us to receive and enjoy and share around.

So, read Psalm 65 again and again and receive again and again!

(Ephesians chapter 1 and 1 Peter 1 verses 3-25 are good reads alongside this psalm – be ready to have your fill though and count your many blessings!!)

Friday 13th October, 2017

If you haven't got the message yet - Psalm 18 is the psalm for me - it sums up much of my life - especially the last 17+ years - and I identify with David's struggle, his faith and his God-given resources so much! If you have a wall to overcome, a high pathway ahead in life or a particular struggle in life - Psalm 18 can help you let go and let God...

But also, why not scroll down to Psalm 40 or 41 or 51 below?

At this milestone in life for me they hold a meaning deep in significance - and they might be God's way of speaking into your life at this time.......

------

Friday 22nd September, 2017
At this Anniversary time I can but encourage you to take some time and scroll down through the Psalms mentioned below - treasures of honest faith - not always blue skies for the psalmist!  It may be that the Spirit of God causes you to linger on one - don't rush by - stay a while and let Him do a work in your life through the words of yesteryear, His Living Word of today.

However, if you don't want to do that - why not sit a while with one psalm, my psalm, Psalm 18.

What an honest set of words from David!

They have got me through many a hard time - and got me over many a wall in my life!

They have reminded me that my God, the LORD God, reigns and has been faithfully good to me!

They have become a living lifeline to my mum after the death of dad - and I know the God of Psalm 18 can do great things in your life - whether the skies are blue or not at this time.......

   Psalm 64

Some of us could easily qualify for a Diploma of Complaints – if not for the full degree in the art of complaining!

We are able to find fault in almost anything and anyone.

We are not the first by a long way and the Bible shows us that even some of the great heroes of our faith were complainers – and not just to each other but to God Himself.

Moses complained because God wanted him to speak for Him but he muttered that he had a speech problem.

Jeremiah complained because he thought he was far too young for God to use him as a prophet.

Habakkuk complained because he considered that God was not acting fast enough in his society to bring about truth and justice.

And here in Psalm 64 - David is bringing his complaint to the forefront of God’s attention.

There was a conspiracy against David and he didn’t feel that was right – at all!

Who or what would be top of your complaints-list?

Lack of monies?  Husband or wife or children?  Poor health?

Job problems or lack of a job?  The neighbours?  The Pastor or elders?

The bus always running late??  The tv schedule for this week!?

Habakkuk had two big complaints against the LORD – one was not enough!!

He was fed up waiting for God to act and he had decided to tell Him.

Chapters 1 and 2 of that prophetic book in the Old Testament are a great conversation between the prophet and his God...complaint..answer..complaint..answer.

Chapter 3 is where the penny drops for Habakkuk and he trusts the LORD God whatever He chooses to do and whenever He will do it.

(The book of Habakkuk is well worth the read – or re-read!)

Eventually by verse 10 of this Psalm, David takes the same stance.

God is to be trusted above and beyond the situation.

God is the One who alone can provide refuge, a place of safety.

God is to be praised even in the midst of tough times.

Have you handed your complaint over to God – or are you carrying it around with you?  It won’t get any easier or lighter…..

He is willing to listen to your cry.
He is able to deal with anything  –  anything!

Tell Him.
Trust Him.

------

  Psalms 61 and 62

There are some psalms that draw out our praise to God Most High.

There are some psalms that challenge us to get closer to Him.

There are some psalms that uncomfortably hit the spot.

There are some psalms that we just love!

And there are some psalms that are so wonderful to read.

They truly refresh us and make us stronger in our faith.

Meet Psalm 61 and Psalm 62 – a double delight indeed - especially in this season of summer.

Let me encourage you to settle down somewhere quiet and read them now.

May God Himself draw close as you do and may you find shelter in His wings, songs of praise coming from your lips, true rest in God alone and your faith in Christ deepened as you realise He truly is strong and loving.

I shall leave you to read, ponder and pray…..

Thank you LORD God for Psalms 61 and 62.

Amen and amen.

-------

  Psalm 56

It is not a good thing when other people attack us – verbally or physically.

Words can sting, cut, pierce, shake and hurt us long after they are said.

Sometimes it is personal.

Sometimes it is family.

Sometimes it is a colleague – or a friend we have known for some time.

Sometimes it is because we are not like others.

Sometimes it is because we are a Christian, walking with Jesus.

The psalmist is here calling out for help to his God because there are those who are slandering and pursuing him – verbally and physically – and it hurts.

Psalm 56 starts and ends with God’s mercy and gracious salvation however. We do have a habit of forgetting He is with us on tough and bad days as well as the good.

Look at verses 3-4 and 10-11. Are they not a lifebelt of hope for us?

At the end of the day God is eternal, our eternal life is with Christ Jesus and so any hurtful word will not be around then – no word can take that from us! It might be good to press pause now and take a read of Romans 8:18-39 because those verses really do put everything into context for the Christian believer.

When you are ready.... back to Psalm 56.

Of course it does not mean that the words and attacks will not hurt but David had found a way to deal with it all that is well worth taking on board.

Look at verse 12.  He brought a thank-offering.

Thanksgiving is an amazing way to topple the wall just built by the enemy!

Give thanks to God that He is good and eternal!

Give thanks for the health and daily good things of life you do have!

Give thanks for the one who has hurt you – yes I did write those words – that they may find the reality of God’s love, joy and peace for themselves.

And then find someone to bless with kind and loving words –

 by a visit maybe or a telephone call, email, text or by taking a walk

and discovering who God wants you to meet.

Stranger things have happened you know........

-------

    Psalm 51

Oh where would many of us be without forgiveness from the God of love, mercy and outrageously amazing grace.

Psalm 50 may bring the sound of bad news and judgement but...

Psalm 51 brings the joyful sound of hope, forgiveness and restoration!

Pardon me but this is a time for a big WOOHOO Yippee HALLELUJAH!!

We are told that this particular psalm was written by David after the prophet Nathan had come to him after David, the king of Israel, had committed adultery with Bathsheba. (2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12).

These words can be said by anyone however…. so may we never point the moral finger at another person.

We are all sinners from birth.

We all fail God.

We all fail others.

We all fail ourselves.

We all know ourselves too well and the wrongdoing past and present.

We can nod with the words of verse 3.

‘For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.’

However – this psalm starts with the mercy, unfailing love, compassion, forgiveness and cleansing that comes from God – not our sins.

Phew.

Our God is big enough to forgive our sin, clean us through and through and restore us to a place of joy!!

He can even use us then – verse 13 is therefore truly amazing in the light of our sin – God can and does work through us, channels cleansed and filled by His Holy Spirit.

Oh I have said enough.

Read and re-read this wonderful psalm.

Believe it all for yourself - or someone trapped by their sin.

Confess - or pray for that person.

Receive with open hands and heart and mind.

Sing out a song of thanks?

Maybe even give a little woohoo yippee hallelujah - summer or not!?!

------

    Psalm 50

Sometimes we are expecting a visit from someone and then it all turns on its head – the visit is nothing like we had anticipated and the rest of the day or week is completely different! Read this psalm with that it mind.

Here comes God, the Mighty One, the LORD in all His splendour -  but it isn’t all good news as was expected.

The first two verses are full of glory and majesty as the LORD God is described shining out in radiant spendour. What a glorious image indeed!

However the tone is changing in the next verse and by verse four there is the announcement of judgment by God Himself…..on His very own people.    Verse five declares they are to come together, ready to hear what their God will say.

And it is not good news at all.

It is a right Royal telling off.

Read verses 7-21 and tremble.

God is right to correct us when we need it.

Our motives, actions, words, companions and even our worship all need His rebuking, correcting, guiding so very often. So do not judge these Israelites but rather allow God to use this psalm for His Kingdom rule in our lives.

The psalm ends with a two-sided coin of judgment or mercy for those who listen, hear and act – one way or the other.

His Holy Spirit has a habit to making a verse or word so true to our lives even hundreds of years after it was penned.

Is there a verse in Psalm 50 that you need to re-visit with Him even now?

Is this psalm a psalm of judgment to you today - or is it a stepping stone on God’s path of salvation for you?

The Mighty One spoke these words many years ago.

It is still His Living Word even this day to those of us who read it.

And thankfully Psalm 51 follows next time........

--------

   Psalm 47

Maybe you were hoping I would go to Psalm 48  –

 47 is far too noisy for some of us!!

There is a place for Psalm 46 v 10 in our worship to God.

There has to be a place also for Psalm 47.

Applause!

           SHOUTS!!                    Trumpets!

and above all that there is to be singing?!?       Yep.

As you read this psalm can you not picture the worship above the noise and recognise the reason for all this celebration?

A child gets excited when they are given a present – and even beforehand!

A crowd jump for joy at a football match or a pop concert.

A large crowd line the streets and applaud and shout when royalty passes.

In Psalm 47 the focus of the worship is that God is King over all, He is the LORD Most High.

He is our living and true God and more worthy of praise from our lips and hands and bodies and musical instruments than any birthday present-giver or pop star or football hero or member of a royal family.

He deserves our celebration of praise – so why should we not declare it in the way that the worshippers were led to in Psalm 47?

Are our hands dirty?                                 Is our tongue at fault?

Do our musical instruments only play secular chords?

Why not read again the last four verses of Psalm 46 and then enter into Psalm 47 – hands and voices and all!!

We may not sing in Hebrew and we may not be gifted to play the trumpet but nothing else has changed – God is still King – and moreso He has poured out His outrageous grace in and through Christ Jesus.

Toe-tapping time me thinks at least!!!

(ps – go on treat yourself – read Psalm 150 now!)

-------

   Psalm 46

We all have days when it appears that the worst-possible-ever scenario has happened........Maybe it has for you.

This psalm is for you.

We can all have a day, an hour or a  moment when we fear some sort of attack from our personal enemy – maybe regarding health, family, finance or an arrow fired in the spiritual battle.

This psalm is for you.

We all have days when the noise and strife of the world gets too close for comfort and we long for that desert island in the sun.

This psalm is for you.

As I read these verses again,I could well imagine the Director of Music conducting the musicians in singing this great psalm!!

Verses 1-3 would be the first verse sung.

Verses 4-7 the second.

The chorus would be verses 8-10 and the finale is verse 11 in all its glory!

What powerful imagery the writer uses in this psalm of praise!

Look again and contrast verses 1-3 to verses 4-7.

The fears of natural disaster and enemy attack are reduced by the Presence and Greatness of the LORD God, the Most High, El-Shaddai (the LORD Almighty) and there is hope indeed.

And verse 10?

There is your desert island.

Take up the invitation of verse 8 and find that perfect stillness - two verses later in God Himself.

So are you singing these words yet?

Even if the worst happens....

Let’s go and splash about confidently in God’s river!

Or.......maybe we really need to sit quietly on the riverbank with Him....and verses 10 and 11…..

--------

   Psalms 42 and 43

And now at this time of the year we come to these two wonderfully and encouragingly honest psalms!

There is almost nothing to be said – except for me to point you in the direction of reading them now -

wherever you are and making them your own cry, now…. or for someone you know in that pit.

Never ever think you will never be that low.

Almost seventeen years ago Psalms 42 and 43 were read and considered one morning in devotions at the Bethany Christian Centre, a place of mercy, support and rehabilitation where I had been admitted.

I never expected that my morning afterwards would be so eventful as God stirred around in my soul,

brought me to many tears

and reached deep, deep within me over a particular issue in my life.

Do you have a thirst for God?

Did you used to attend a place of worship?

Are you looking down and around you?

Or upwards to the Living God?

Can you see some blue sky through the clouds?

Are you struggling in a waterfall of chaos?

You are not alone.

Do you know that God loves you?    He really does!!

Will you next come to a church group or service during Lent or Easter somewhat more ready to worship the God who has helped you?

I would encourage you to read these psalms over again, slowly and prayerfully.

And to expect the living God to meet with you right where you are….

--------

  Psalm 41

Good days.

Bad days.

We all have them – some of us seem to have more of one than the other at times. Good health. Bad health.

Happy family. Unhappy family.

Successful job. What job? Money money. No money.

Dear David had his fair share of both and the Psalms are a wonderful mixture of mountain-top experiences and valley-trudging times, days when God is so near and times when He seems so far away, times of singing aloud in worship and periods when we mumble and grumble.

Psalm 41 is for the days of weakness and sickness.

David is stuck in his bed of sickness and he has had enough.

But – he knows God is there with him.

This psalm is best read slowly and quietly.

It could be read to a patient near you right now.

It is a psalm that starts with human weakness

and ends with the everlasting LORD God.

Amen and amen indeed.

Thank you LORD God for Psalm 41.

--------

 Psalm 40.

Some of us are not very good at waiting.

Some of us could wait all day!

Some of us keep asking ‘Are we there yet??’

Each time I hear of this psalm I am reminded of the song released by the group U2

on their 1983 album War called How Long’.

How long will we wait for the right bus to come along?

How long for the right answer to our questioning?

In the NIV translation of this psalm David says he waited patiently and

the first three verses are enough to read and enjoy and ponder, but –

this psalm has 17 verses and it is ALL a song of testimony!

The past and present are wrapped together into one testimony here.

That is often the way God works in our lives.

God has helped – can He now?

>>  In verses 1-11 David remembers past blessings.

>>  In verses 12-17 he needs a blessing or two – soon!

Read this psalm through – but don’t rush it!

Are you waiting for something to happen in your life?

Do you need something to happen?

Do you publicly need to say something?

Or can you no longer see God?

Is there something or someone in your life blocking the view?

Have you lost your courage for living for Jesus?

Are you feeling ‘poor and needy’?

Let me encourage you to count your past blessings, one by one, because God is not very far away at all

and your ‘how long’ could be very soon.

Waiting patiently is a lesson worth learning…….

(Hebrews 11 is well worth a wee read now by the way.

And of course…..that song by U2 could be worth a listen?)

   Psalm 37

Do not fret...

Trust...

Delight in...

Commit...

Be still...

Refrain from...

Turn from...

Do good...

Wait for...

Consider...’

This psalm has enough to keep us going for a whole week – or longer!!

And then we also have ‘the LORD laughs’ in verse 13....

the imagery in verses 23 and 24

....and a jolly good ending in verses 39 and 40!

Phew what a psalm!!

Thank you muchly David.

The psalm is very much a ‘life-psalm’ – with its ups and downs, the good, the bad and the wickedly ugly,

time somewhere to pause and consider what’s going on around us, and above all, literally, the LORD God

who is never far away, willing and able to help and far more in control than we sometimes realise.

From the list at the top of this page, which one got your attention more?

Which one describes your need best right now?

Which one will be the focus of your prayer-conversation with God?

Psalm 37 – wow.

Thank you David.

Thank you Lord that it is in our Bible.

Amen?      Amen!

Saturday , 31st December 2016

At this time of the year let me encourage you to take some time-out with a Psalm or two..........find some space, open your Bible, read, ponder.....pray..........there really is something special about each one of them.

Psalm 11 or 18 again? Or maybe 23 or 25?

And then......maybe share your findings with someone else in the early days of 2017?

---------

Psalm 35

               Stumble.

Trip.

                                                                                                  Fall.

It can happen to any of us – at any time – anywhere.

It can be a physical fall...or emotional...or mental...or spiritual.

It can happen when we are alone – or when others are around, sometimes waiting and watching, ready to snigger and sneer. That was David’s experience in verse 15 and I think it hurt as much as the stumble did.

I have a good friend who tripped as he left a building where he had been meeting a few friends. He broke his arm in three places – ouch.

I know someone who struggles emotionally with something in the past – it wasn’t his fault however – someone else tripped him up big time.

My own life story has too many stumbles and falls for my liking.

We are not the first to stumble, trip and fall.

We will not be the last either.

But – we do not have to stay down, bruised, trapped, broken.

David’s experience in psalm 35 shows us he was down but not out.

He was surrounded but not defeated.

He was weak but not alone.

I love verses 22 and 23 and the last three verses (26-28) are full of hope and trust.

Look them up and read them now?

Are you down? Look up.

Are you bruised? Call on God for mercy.

Are you weak? Lean on Him for strength and slowly, but surely,

 you will start to move again.   Philippians 4 verse 13!!

(2 Corinthians 1 vs 1-11 and chapters 4 and 5 from that letter are a good read

alongside this psalm…...Paul had his struggles too.)

-------

   Psalm 32

In the Contemporary English Version of this psalm, which I love and use on my tablet app, this psalm is entitled ‘The Joy of Forgiveness’.

I have read this psalm many many times over the years as the notes and underlining in my study Bible will confirm!

And yet today, as I sit here with my Bible open before me, I am painfully aware of my weaknesses, failings and sins in my recent daily living and I certainly do not ‘feel’ this ‘joy of forgiveness’ that David is talking about.

How could he in fact?? Look at the life he lived!!

I feel more like verses 3 and 4 than verse 11 to be honest.....

David really did feel bad in verses 3 and 4 – physically, emotionally and spiritually I am sure.

However the first word in verse 5 is the turning point.

Then...........

They do say that confession is good for the soul.

In verse 5 David decides to cover up no more.

The mask falls and he approaches God, determined to come clean.

The amazing thing is that God already knows about our weaknesses and sins and is waiting with the undeserved gift of forgiveness in His hands, waiting to hand it over and make it ours.

Honestly!

Yep – now!

For you.

And me!!

God even promises to teach us how to live aright from now on if we accept His Lordship (verses 8 and 9).

God loves us.   Fact.    John 3 verse 16.

This psalm is indeed all about forgiveness – over and over again.

Are you singing with verse 11 yet – or do you need to read these verses again.

I do.       Right now in fact.

------------

    Psalm 29

Not everyone likes the thunder roaring overhead.

I know someone who still calls for her thunder buddy when the claps begin.

I prefer to watch the lightning strikes – awesome – although I do think that the sound of the thunder rumbling ever closer is pretty special.

Psalm 29 is special.

It conveys, in one image after another, the power and authority of God’s voice and, as you read these eleven verses, you sense that His voice is even more effective than thunder and lightning!

I think this psalm has to be read aloud to get its full impact – try it!

(Oh go on – a bit louder!)

Can you feel His voice at work in heaven itself,

across creation and in the place of worship?

Can you picture these scenes as David tells them?

I would be truly lost without a copy of the Bible nearby.

I carry a New Testament in my back pocket. I have a Bible app on my mobile, tablet and laptop now.

I need God’s Word with me more and more in my life.

How do you hear God’s voice speaking?

Where?  When?  What did He last say to you?

Do we tremble? Do we act on it? Do we share it?

When we read His Word (regularly) are we (always) expecting to hear His Voice?

Do we read it regularly? Do we have a daily 'rhythm of devotion'?

I love this psalm. I don’t always like what I read in the Bible however.

I am not expected to like it all but I am called to trust and obey,

to read and meditate, to ask and understand, with the help of the Holy Spirit,

to make His Kingdom Word a living reality in my life.

There will be times His voice strikes me like lightning – wow!

There are times it roars like thunder – ohh!

There are times it is a still, small voice – gently reminding.

It is always true and correct.  Always.

Finally, why not go outside and read this psalmaloud?

Saturday 29th October, 2016...............let me encourage you to dig around in the Psalms below.......is there one that spoke to you in particular? why was that? what did God say to you from it?

......have you shared this someone else?

Friday 14th October, 2016................Let me invite you to share-a-psalm.

Please think and pray it through.......and share a Psalm or a verse from one.......with someone......Today!

Fruitful blessings!

 Psalm 27

Light at the end of the tunnel – phew!! It is always a relief.

Darkness isn’t a phobia for me but I sure like to see where I am going.

This psalm would make a great movie – there is drama, action and emotion.

Many of us have been encouragingly challenged by Bear Grylls story of God’s grace in his life as it appears on the Alpha.org and YouTube websites etc that has just been released this month.

So let the cameras roll on Psalm 27....

We have the sense of ‘no fear’ displayed in verse 1 –

although the scene is clearly in darkness.

There is a real hope of Light.

There are attacks and attacks in the next two verses  –  cue an army on the set!

In verses 4-6 there is a scene of peace  –  ahh bliss.

However in the next scene (verses 7-10) we have some urgent praying and

frayed emotions as family rejection kicks in.

There is then a scene of trekking along the right path in the next three verses,

but with the enemy right on David’s heels – too close in fact!

Ah but...the psalm ends with the words of a true braveheart!

If a film was made of your life what would be the major scenes?

Would God be the central character remembered by the audience?

Who are or have been the enemies in your life?

What one thing would you ask of the LORD?

What is your number one prayer request these days?

Our lives may not have been what we always hoped or planned for

but the Living God is never off the set,

always a prayer away,

ever ready to lead and guide and protect us.

As you ponder the scenes in this psalm, and in your life,

make the last two verses your Oscar-winning speech!

Curtains please.

  Psalm 25

Imagine with me a person standing out on a trapeze wire.

They are stuck. Trapped by fear.

Turn to Psalm 25 now and read it through.

The shame of getting it wrong is there in verses 2 and 3.

There has been failure in the past.

The previous steps went okay –  eventually - look at verses 4-7.

The LORD can really help with the steps ahead – verses 8-15.

Forgiveness for the past. Freedom from the snare today.

Hallelujah indeed my soul cries out today as I re-read these words!!

However verses 16-22 clearly show the need for help is so very real.

 There is fear. There are troubles to be dealt with.

There is a real sense of loneliness out there on the wire.

A while back I had coffee with a good friend. He wept as he told me more of his life story. He is trapped on a spot in his life that happened over 30 years ago.

We can be walking along the wire of life then – wham – we stop.

Something from the past or the present or the future hits us.

A relationship, an experience, at work, rest or play, our health, finances, or a family member or event can all have an impact on in us exactly the same way as David describes in this particular psalm.

We need help to get moving again.

We need someone to show us where to place our feet. Someone we can trust.

Someone who will not repeatedly remind us of the past.

Someone who will take us forward….step by step.

Time to read Psalm 25 again me thinks

and then start moving

slowly forward

step  by  step.

Somedays the wire seems longer and harder….verse 17!

Keep on looking at God….verse 15!

Keep on going on….trusting in this God….verses 1-3!

(Paul’s words in Philippians 3 verses 12 – 4 v 1 are worth a read!)

   Psalm 23

Everyone’s favourite?

I would think that although most of us know this psalm by heart it isn’t necessarily everyone’s favourite. We may each have our own special psalm.   However there is just that something special about Psalm 23.

A psalm of David.

The shepherd’s psalm.

I was recently chatting with someone who used to be a shepherdess and she said that a shepherd must make the sheep his/her only priority  –  nothing else really matters.

Think that through as you read these six verses (maybe in another translation).

Now read it again with all the imagination you can muster....…the sheep…..fields of green…...valleys dark..…..and the shepherd with his rod and staff.

Finally, read it through from a sheep’s perspective…go on..try!

(Remember – we are all like sheep....)

It is a lovely, lovely psalm isn’t it?

It offers hope and encouragement,

provision and rest,

guidance, comfort and protection,

goodness and mercy.

Which verse describes best where you are today on God’s hillside of life?

What do you want the Good Shepherd to do for you today?

Where is He asking you to follow Him?

There is very little that can be said in addition to these verses really. The psalm says it all.  Whatever you need or want, may Psalm 23 be your prayer this day.

------------

  Psalm 19

It is one of those glorious Monday mornings here as I write these words!

The sky is blue and cloudless. The sun is hot and bright.

I set out early to cut the hedge – but the trimmer wouldn’t work – aarrgh!!

Oh well, never mind –  World Cup football on the television later – aahh.

This psalm is very much a psalm of 2 halves.

Look at verses 1-6…….and then 7-14.

In the first half Creation above is given a big 10/10

– every day from every corner of the planet!

And every night also of course – twinkling stars included!

The blue sky days may enforce this wonder of creation but every day, sunshine or cloud, rain or wind, gives us an opportunity to look upward and say a massive ‘thank-you’ to the One who made it all and who gave it to us to enjoy…and look after.

Then the second half kicks off in verse 7 and we come across words such as perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, pure, sure, righteous.

Even the wonder of creation is outshone by what the psalmist directs our attention to in these verses. Creation above us in the skies has its beauty but it is somewhat imperfect.  David has discovered something that is perfect, something that is better for us in the long run than even the most glorious sunset or twinkling star.

Are the words in verses 7-11 your experience of God’s rules for daily living?

Or do you prefer your gold and honey and source of pleasure more?

The Christian disciple has to be warned and rewarded by God’s perfect rules and so,

the last three verses of Psalm 19 are truly a God-send.

We will fail. We will get yellow cards from the Heavenly Referee but here is mercy and forgiveness and in verse 14 a most glorious prayer that we can all make ours, whether it is a lovely Monday morning or not, whether the hedge needs cut or not, whether we like football or not!

Make the words of v.14 your prayer right now.

Go stand outside, if you are able to, as you do.

  Psalm 18 vs 30-36

For me, this is like visiting an old friend. This psalm has been my comfort many a time and in particular these seven verses. They have reminded me that others have had trying days too – and have come through them.

Life is truly like an obstacle race, with hurdles and objects in our path.

There are even days when it is one hard time after another.

There are days of plain sailing then – wham bam – something or someone appears right in our path and we cannot see the way around or over or past.

I have a good friend who is still adjusting to life four years after a traumatic end to his job. He suffers from diabetes and his sight is not good. Then one week he tripped and badly broken his arm – in three places.

My dad lost a young sister and brother in a war bombing. He was badly injured. He then suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.

Both of them are Christian men.

Life’s problems do not pass Christian believers by.

David certainly had his fair share of bad times -

Goliath was just one of the giants he faced on his life’s journey.

Read these seven verses and let your imagination work.

David was not alone.

David knew the LORD would get him to his destination.

David knew his God would keep him safe – whatever and however high the mountain path or wall might be.

When we take the high road who travels with us?

Travelling with the Creator God, His people, relying on His promises and His Word and following Jesus, who walked this earth and understands our humanity is the best ever contents of any backpack– without a doubt.

Read the verses again and keep on going on!

(If you can get a copy of ‘Facing Your Giants’ by Max Lucado,

I recommend it joins your reading list.)

=========

  Psalm 16

I am not a great reader of biographies, although I read a lot.

However I do remember Run, Baby, Run by Nicky Cruz when I was a teenager, the Charles Colson story after the Watergate political scandal happened in America and of course Sir Alex Ferguson’s latest chunky read!

What books do you recall reading?

Have you read any book by someone who became a Christian?

Or maybe you have heard someone give their life-story of how they met Jesus?

I reckon that this lovely psalm is part of David’s amazing testimony – his life story of journeying with God – possibly at the latter end of his life? It is full of so many good things as he looks around at his life and then forward to life beyond the grave.

There is no mention of tending the sheep as a youth, of Goliath, Saul, Jonathan or Absalom. There are no words re-telling the battles fought, won or lost. There is no mention of his adultery or other weaknesses. This is not a story for the press to print on their front page for sure.

This is David acknowledging that above, beneath, and around everything else in his life there is and was God.

In fact he says that without God he wouldn’t have a life.

 Can we echo that??

Look at Psalm 16 with me now.

I was reminded of Daniel in the lions’ den as I read the first 2 verses.

The next two verses told me not to take lightly the lives of others – believers and unbelievers can teach us much.

Aren’t verses 5 and 6 just lovely? God has been so good to David.

I pictured David driving in the next two verses – with God as his instructor guiding, teaching, helping him along life’s varied route!

And then verses 9-11....for David and all believers death is not the end.

It is the gateway into something even better!

What is your experience of God?

Where do you see His hand at work over your life?

What has He provided for you?

Where are you heading after death happens?

(We will look at Psalm 84 later – but it is a possible read now, or also Paul’s testimony in Philippians chapter 1.)

===========

    Psalm 14

Have you ever done anything foolish?

Have you ever been called a fool because of something you said?

One of my favourite comedy programmes on television was Blackadder – apart from series 1 to be honest – and in it I warm to the character called Baldrick, played marvellously by Tony Robinson. He is the fool who says and does what many of us are thinking is the most obvious answer…and gets his just rewards!

I think there is a Baldrick in many of us to be honest!

The sad part in all the programmes, however, is that he is the butt for many of Blackadder’s tricks and wise sayings. He makes Blackadder look good of course.

Now turn with me to this psalm. Read it through.

Did you think of anyone in verse 1? Were you glad you were not that person?

Read again verses 2 and 3 – aloud?

There may be many in this world who ridicule the LORD God, even saying He does not exist. There are many whose lifestyles are not good, not pleasing to God, the One who ultimately decides all things.

Whoever we are, you and I are or were fools, living our lives for ourselves or even others – but not for God above all.

So before we judge others too harshly we need reminding that our spiritual freedom, our salvation is a gift of God’s outrageous grace in Christ Jesus.

 Look at verse 7 with me.

Isn’t that wonderful – even when we fail foolishly, our God is able and willing to restore our fortunes from His rich treasure-chest!

Does this psalm encourage you to pray for, seek out or speak with those you know who do not know God?

Don’t judge them – pray for them – with humility.

Or does it bring you to your knees, asking for forgiveness and restoration for foolish things said, done or even thought? If it does, then some rejoicing is in order and all praise goes to the Living and True God, the God of Jacob and Israel, and you and I. This is our God!

  Amen? Amen!!

======

Psalm 13

More questions!!

The first two verses are question..question..question..question..question.

The next two are wanting an answer –  and soon!

The last two are happy to wait.

Where are you in your walk with God right now?

Questioning? Expecting? Waiting?

David wrote these words we are told and yet here we are all these years later reading them for ourselves. For some of us the questions are so real and it seems as if our Christian lives are dominated by them day by day by day by day! It may be that our questions are part of the reason we are not yet a believer, like doubting Thomas in the New Testament.

One of the great things about the psalmist, David or whoever, is that they expected God to answer. The history of Israel reminded them of how He had answered in the past days and years. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of what God has done for us in the past, how He answered prayers, how He acted and spoke to us and also to others.

(Have you read a Christian biography recently by the way?)

Or we may need to wait a tad longer for the answer – if it is to come in this life.

Watching a kettle boil will not make it boil any faster.

Glaring at the traffic lights will not make them change any quicker.

Getting impatient with God may not speed up His ways.

David was prepared to trust....and to sing to the LORD!! Have you tried that method of waiting? Is there a song of worship or trust in your thoughts even now? Is there a worship cd nearby that contains a song to express your praise to a God who is totally trustworthy, faithful and good – however long He takes to answer our cries?

Read the psalm again, two verses at a time, and respond to this God after each with a prayer, a question....

or a song.                                  Psalm 147 may help.
